What They Covet / Karrie Kaneda from Happy Habitat

This week we sit down for a chat with Karrie Kaneda, owner and designer of Happy Habitat:  a line of eco-friendly throw blankets. We absolutely adore her work, both as an environmentalist and a fellow Midwest designer (Karrie is a local Kansas Citian!).

We hope you enjoy our conversation as much as we have.

Introducing: Alegria Home

“Alegria” means joy and happiness in Spanish. And we were filled with just that when we received our first shipment of decorative pillows and cotton throws from Alegria Home. We are happy to have such beautiful items in the shop, but we are also so excited to be a part of something good like this company….

Alegria Home was founded by textile designer, Allison Joy Jones, after she spent time traveling with her husband in Mexico. She fell in love with the rich traditions of Latin America and quickly realized that this fresh inspiration she had discovered had not yet found it’s way back to the states. With the help of Aid to Artisans, Allison was able to connect with various makers in Chiapas, Mexico and Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. Alegria Home’s focus is to bring business opportunities to talented artisans that would otherwise not have the ability to sell their products to a larger market. With ethical fair trade as the backbone to this company, Alegria donates part of their profits to the artisans we work with to help them promote and grow their own business.

Back to School: Apartment & Dorm Decor

The summer is coming to a close and I am getting ready to back to head back to school.  Though I am more than upset to leave Coveted Home, I decided to focus on the sweeter side of the bittersweet end and use the knowledge I’ve gained here at the shop to create a rough, but helpful, Back to School interior guide.  I took queues from the simple and tasteful style that has (hopefully) rubbed off on me during my time here, thanks to Mel and Jaclyn, and combined it with the lessons I’ve already learned about small-dorm/apartment living.

What I have learned from years of dorm living is everything (if possible) should have more than one purpose.  I have chosen the wire stackable storage for it’s thin frame and versatility. Multiple can be stacked on top of each other  for maximum storage, but it is short enough on it’s own to be stacked on top of a dresser if you find that you are rapidly running out of floor space. The baskets can be used as intended or turned upside down if you’re in a pinch for table space.

The nesting tables are perhaps the most versatile and space-efficient pieces (as well as some of the most stylin). They can be used all around an apartment or dorm. When your done they slide right up under one another, making them useful and space efficient.

I have chosen a stool for similar reasons. The stool can be used in place of a desk chair or as extra seating when friends come to visit with out taking up an entire corner of your room. (Also, another table surface in a pinch!)

Additional, indispensable forms of storage, for me, are trunks and built-in bed drawers.  The trunk pictured below is lightweight but big enough for things you want to hide. The bed is white with side drawers making it useful and easy to decorate with colorful pillows and throws, as opposed to committing to one duvet and pillow color scheme for who-knows-how-long.  Keeping large pieces like the bed and bedding simple allows for customizability based on personal style changes and trends.  Don’t wanna get stuck with a coral chevron duvet for all for years of college (We’ve all been there).

Remember when I said everything should have more than one use? Check out that bangin headboard.  It’s actually a rug! Invest in a good rug that will last you all through college. Rugs always make a school dorm or apartment feel like home whatever way they are being used!

Lastly, accessorize with small personal touches and it will make all the difference. When it comes to small dorm/apartment spaces personal style is easily expressed through the accessories since the large pieces typically need to fit a budget and double as storage. That being said, I think we’ve done a pretty solid job of finding stylish pieces big and small to fit the college student budget while staying stylish.

Good luck to all students on the upcoming semester! Stop by the shop and we will hook you up with your dream dorm/apartment decor on a budget.

Happy decorating!

A Sanctuary for Sleep

One of the newest lines soon to arrive at the shop this season features 100% certified organic bedding and bath linens. Ever since we set our eyes on this gorgeous line of textiles (which includes duvets and coverlets to Moroccan-inspired quest towels), we can’t stop dreaming about what our ultimate bedroom oasis would look like. We have collected a few of our favorite styles from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams’ vast collection of upholstered beds and lovely furniture to create an imaginary sanctuary. As a reminder, we are in the midst of MGBW’s Spring Event (now thru May 5). This means 20% off custom upholstery, furniture and accessories. In conclusion, this dream could easily become a reality!!

Meet Rebecca Atwood

Our team at Coveted Home has been long-time admirers of Rebecca Atwood‘s work. First, we like that the Brooklyn-based textile designer manufactures her products right in New York City’s garment district. All pieces are either hand-painted or hand-dyed in a process called Shibori (which is essentially the ancient Japanese answer to tie-dye). Second, her products are so. darn. cool. Is no wonder that everyone from the New York Times to Design*Sponge have written about her pieces!

We are so pleased to announce that we’ll receive our first shipment of Rebecca Atwood pillows this week! We hope that you’ll find her equally as enchanting. Happy Monday!

Bedding Fit For a Queen

The awesome thing about MGBW’s Spring sale is that it encompasses so much more than beautiful furniture! For example, their yummy bedding line. Like most design aficionados, I’m a bedding nut for several reasons. One, it’s the easiest and most affordable way to transform a bedroom. Two, nothing beats climbing into a bed with fresh new sheet (especially when they’re super luxurious).

MGBW’s bedding collection is fairly new. When the company decided to launch the line they chose to partner with Matouk, a incredible high-end linen company. Like MGBW, Matouk manufactures all products in the United States and has a die-hard commitment to quality. Together, the two came up with chic and modern offerings unlike anything else on the market. The simple pieces are easy to mix and match with existing bedding and have a thread count of 520 (!!). If you want a better sleep, you know where to find us!

Fresh New Arrivals

mudclothpillows

It’s 75 degrees today! Which means we are opening the doors and windows and letting that fresh Spring air inside. We’re also going to be dreaming about where we can place the shop’s new Spring goodies in our homes! The past few weeks have brought a slew of new arrivals that we just love. For example, the incredibly chic mudcloth pillows above. In a way, they’re like a leather jacket for your sofa as they make their surroundings look so much cooler!

Go Back To Bed

Sometimes even the simplest things, like getting the mail, can slowly dissipate from your everyday routine. Remembering to incorporate this near effortless task at the shop has been somewhat of a challenge for me. It is really not that bad. I am being a bit dramatic, but checking the mail on a regular basis IS on my list for 2014’s new year’s resolutions. Believe! I bring this up because Jaclyn checked the mail today (since I had forgotten to do so) and we had received the Spring 2014 catalog from John Robshaw Textiles!

On a cold, quiet day like today, Robshaw’s rich color choices and bold patterns were just what I needed to get inspired. His bedding, in particular, can make even the most enthusiastic morning person want to crawl back under the covers. The Celi Bedding is neutral in color but powerful in pattern. The Nikolo Bedding has a sweet quality showcased in magenta and coral. Both of these collections could be the perfect backdrop for any of our John Robshaw decorative pillows that we have at the shop! Shown below.
