Ode to Throw Pillows

Throw Pillows. A constant comfort for both mind and body: Throw Pillows.  For me, they satisfy my almost bi-annual compulsion to change everything.  I’ve finally found that if I just change the vibe of my throw pillows, that dangerous and expensive compulsion is satisfied.

The beauty of throw pillows is the amount of customizability.  Your personal style can be perfectly reflected in varying styles and patterns of pillows arranged, (or thrown) around the bed and the house.  Throw pillows are so easily interchangeable come season or style change.

Below are some of my throw pillow picks from the shop and others!

Back to School: Apartment & Dorm Decor

The summer is coming to a close and I am getting ready to back to head back to school.  Though I am more than upset to leave Coveted Home, I decided to focus on the sweeter side of the bittersweet end and use the knowledge I’ve gained here at the shop to create a rough, but helpful, Back to School interior guide.  I took queues from the simple and tasteful style that has (hopefully) rubbed off on me during my time here, thanks to Mel and Jaclyn, and combined it with the lessons I’ve already learned about small-dorm/apartment living.

What I have learned from years of dorm living is everything (if possible) should have more than one purpose.  I have chosen the wire stackable storage for it’s thin frame and versatility. Multiple can be stacked on top of each other  for maximum storage, but it is short enough on it’s own to be stacked on top of a dresser if you find that you are rapidly running out of floor space. The baskets can be used as intended or turned upside down if you’re in a pinch for table space.

The nesting tables are perhaps the most versatile and space-efficient pieces (as well as some of the most stylin). They can be used all around an apartment or dorm. When your done they slide right up under one another, making them useful and space efficient.

I have chosen a stool for similar reasons. The stool can be used in place of a desk chair or as extra seating when friends come to visit with out taking up an entire corner of your room. (Also, another table surface in a pinch!)

Additional, indispensable forms of storage, for me, are trunks and built-in bed drawers.  The trunk pictured below is lightweight but big enough for things you want to hide. The bed is white with side drawers making it useful and easy to decorate with colorful pillows and throws, as opposed to committing to one duvet and pillow color scheme for who-knows-how-long.  Keeping large pieces like the bed and bedding simple allows for customizability based on personal style changes and trends.  Don’t wanna get stuck with a coral chevron duvet for all for years of college (We’ve all been there).

Remember when I said everything should have more than one use? Check out that bangin headboard.  It’s actually a rug! Invest in a good rug that will last you all through college. Rugs always make a school dorm or apartment feel like home whatever way they are being used!

Lastly, accessorize with small personal touches and it will make all the difference. When it comes to small dorm/apartment spaces personal style is easily expressed through the accessories since the large pieces typically need to fit a budget and double as storage. That being said, I think we’ve done a pretty solid job of finding stylish pieces big and small to fit the college student budget while staying stylish.

Good luck to all students on the upcoming semester! Stop by the shop and we will hook you up with your dream dorm/apartment decor on a budget.

Happy decorating!

Stripe Tease | Interior Design Kansas City

Now that the holidays are over (can’t imagine that I speak only for myself when I say that I couldn’t be more pleased…) and the new year is fast approaching, I’m looking for fresh ways to liven up my little studio apartment. I think black and white cabana stripes could be the answer. Something about this classic print makes everything around it look clean and new and incredibly stylish. If I could, I’d totally recover my modern lounge chair in black + white stripe upholstery fabric (see last image). Until I can do so, I settled for a few stripe throw pillows : ) How do you incorporate stripes into your home?

What to expect from the unexpected.

Color inspiration found on Pinterest.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Melanie Clouser. I am the new Creative Director at Coveted Home. And I love it here.

I consider myself unconventional. Proudly atypical. And my path to acquiring the position of Creative Director at Coveted Home was just that. With that being said, I also consider myself very lucky. Although I am still getting settled, I have never felt so completely impassioned, excited, and eager to grow like I do with Coveted Home. As most of you know already, I had an amazing mentor to help me transition into the role. It was bittersweet to see Amanda move to Portland last month. I looked forward to being the new Creative Director, but I also grew very fond of Amanda and I did not want to see her go. I am thankful for the time she spent with me so that when the time came to “pass the torch”, it felt seamless.

What an extraordinary feeling to love your job. I have already established such a sense of ownership to Coveted Home. When I am not working, I am still working, and I can’t tell you how happy I am to say that! Jaclyn’s vision is contagious. Not only is my background in Retail Merchandising, but I have a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art, so naturally, I am a strong believer in self-expression through design. That personal space should mirror individual style without sacrificing comfort or quality. The first time I walked into Coveted Home, I could tell that Jaclyn was wanting to convey that exact approach to her customers.

Immediately after I became a part of this store, I started to reflect on my own personal style. What does my space say about who I am as an individual? Am I representing myself appropriately? Am I telling a story, and if so, are people listening? I contemplated on what truly inspires me by using tools like Pinterest and Houzz. I sifted through numerous issues of every major home furnishings magazine to get a solid feel of what my eye initially is drawn to. What I had concluded to was not surprising, nor would it shock anyone who knows me well. I am intrigued by the unexpected. I revel in contrast and differing forms. To marry unlikely objects that would otherwise never meet. This is my “style compass”. I will let it guide me as I begin this new and thrilling endeavor at Coveted Home.

Living room found on Houzz. Love the overlapping prints on the walls.

Bedroom inspiration found on Houzz. I am a sucker for tufting.

High Point, Fall 2012

I missed the furniture market in High Point, North Carolina in the spring because it happened the very same weekend we opened the new Coveted Home shop. So I had not been in an whole year…and I missed it! Going this fall was a fantastic reunion trip–I got to see many old friends, meet new ones and the product finds for the store and design clients were off the charts. Following is a small sampling of what I saw…I was there for 5 days so I am really editing the photo selection here so this post doesn’t go on forever!
Although I am not particularly looking for new lighting at the moment I found that I took a TON of photos of light fixtures– be it lamps, chandeliers or sconces.
I love these dramatically scaled floor lamps by Barbara Cosgrove.
Rad sconce from Noir. Do people still say rad? It seemed to be the perfect description for this.
Another fixture from Noir, not sure what it is made from but I like it.
This blown glass bubble chandelier is new from Oly. I always love the dramatic animals they have as a backdrop to the gorgeous furniture.
I didn’t take this photo so much for the lighting as for just how overall beautiful it is.
(Oly showroom again)
This may have been one of my favorite showrooms. The furniture line is called Central Station. It is beautifully hand crafted wood pieces that I can never get enough of. By themselves they are great, but in my opinion the real magic happened when the lighting by Notre Monde was added. And how adorable is it that this duo is dating?? (He makes the furniture, she the lighting)
 This light installation=spectacular
This was my favorite setting at the Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams showroom. I loved everything in it and it was all new: a new coffee table and side table collection of mixed wood tones, new rug, new lamps, new sofa and chairs with a full wood frame.
A quick snipit from the Cisco Brothers showroom. These pink pendants caught my attention, but seriously I love everything in there.
And then there was this showroom. Verellen. Flawless. It is expensive stuff but my god it is made to perfection–so increadably comfortable and beautiful.
I spent nearly an entire day looking at rugs. I have a newfound love for them and am happy to say I now have many more rug sources for design projects. But this one..oh my it was a beauty. A “khotan” style rug, I just learned the term at market and found I love this style, a lot. They look vintage because of the more faded appearance. This one was made in Afganistan.

Great center piece for a table.
Put an orchid or succulent in these and voila, beautiful!
The last four images are from my friends showroom, Texture. They bring in one of a kind pieces, some old some new but all very rustic with a lot of “texture” to them: ) It is all sourced by the owners, Marietta and Patrick, in Indonesia. The last three images show some of the items I bought from them. These along with some other gorgeous items will be here in the shop very very soon!
