Moroccan Rugs on Walls

It was an eleven day expedition across Morocco. In the high mountains we discovered the shaggy, milky-white Beni Ouarain and in the south there were poppy-red flat weaves that are said to be going extinct. The central mountains introduced us to the colorful Azilal while the Sahara showed off her more simplistic carpets, like those of the nomadic Tuareg people. Over those two weeks, with our brows furrowed, we studied, haggled and made life long friends in the various market towns.

Back to School: Apartment & Dorm Decor

The summer is coming to a close and I am getting ready to back to head back to school.  Though I am more than upset to leave Coveted Home, I decided to focus on the sweeter side of the bittersweet end and use the knowledge I’ve gained here at the shop to create a rough, but helpful, Back to School interior guide.  I took queues from the simple and tasteful style that has (hopefully) rubbed off on me during my time here, thanks to Mel and Jaclyn, and combined it with the lessons I’ve already learned about small-dorm/apartment living.

What I have learned from years of dorm living is everything (if possible) should have more than one purpose.  I have chosen the wire stackable storage for it’s thin frame and versatility. Multiple can be stacked on top of each other  for maximum storage, but it is short enough on it’s own to be stacked on top of a dresser if you find that you are rapidly running out of floor space. The baskets can be used as intended or turned upside down if you’re in a pinch for table space.

The nesting tables are perhaps the most versatile and space-efficient pieces (as well as some of the most stylin). They can be used all around an apartment or dorm. When your done they slide right up under one another, making them useful and space efficient.

I have chosen a stool for similar reasons. The stool can be used in place of a desk chair or as extra seating when friends come to visit with out taking up an entire corner of your room. (Also, another table surface in a pinch!)

Additional, indispensable forms of storage, for me, are trunks and built-in bed drawers.  The trunk pictured below is lightweight but big enough for things you want to hide. The bed is white with side drawers making it useful and easy to decorate with colorful pillows and throws, as opposed to committing to one duvet and pillow color scheme for who-knows-how-long.  Keeping large pieces like the bed and bedding simple allows for customizability based on personal style changes and trends.  Don’t wanna get stuck with a coral chevron duvet for all for years of college (We’ve all been there).

Remember when I said everything should have more than one use? Check out that bangin headboard.  It’s actually a rug! Invest in a good rug that will last you all through college. Rugs always make a school dorm or apartment feel like home whatever way they are being used!

Lastly, accessorize with small personal touches and it will make all the difference. When it comes to small dorm/apartment spaces personal style is easily expressed through the accessories since the large pieces typically need to fit a budget and double as storage. That being said, I think we’ve done a pretty solid job of finding stylish pieces big and small to fit the college student budget while staying stylish.

Good luck to all students on the upcoming semester! Stop by the shop and we will hook you up with your dream dorm/apartment decor on a budget.

Happy decorating!

Cutting a Rug

unnamed (9)

Rug shopping can be difficult. Sometimes, you can’t find the right one… rather, it finds you. Coveted Home recently fell into a collection of vintage rugs and still can’t quite come to terms with our good luck. This might sound a bit nutty, but I believe that each rug has it’s own personality. If you saw them in the shop, I just know you’d agree! Until then, feel free to check them out on our Chairish storefront right here.

Currently, we have 4 small kilims. They’re beautiful and have that lovely wear that distinguishes them from Pottery Barn fare. Each measures roughly 2′ x 3′ and would make a wonderful entryway or kitchen rug. Additionally, wouldn’t they be smart wall hangings?

If you’re looking to add color to a room, this vintage wool Russian rug would be an excellent way to go. At 13′ x 10′, it’s ginormous! And absolutely stunning. We currently have it on display at the store and find it to be a glutton for compliments.

Finally, this wool rug from Afghanistan is softer than the rest and certainly more traditional. At 3’10” by 5’8″, it’s the perfect size for an entry way. We also think it would look lovely if layered over a sisal. The colors are shades of brick and cream, making it a neutral piece that could fit in almost any decor.

Check out these pieces and more on Chairish! We’re always adding new inventory. Not to mention, it’s a great way to “visit” the shop from afar : )

With transitioning into the colder months ahead, it is hard to resist the urge to spice up your home with warmer, cozier shades of cranberry, plum, and wine. Rich jewel tones, especially reds, can evoke an inviting yet glamorous quality in any space. We found such inspiration in Sea of Shoes’ blogger, Jane Aldridge’s Dallas, Texas home. She is only 21, but her collected style is one for the ages. In her bedroom, there are swanky layers of softness like fur, cotton, and velvet. That merlot faux fur throw is top notch!

Our love for the color wine (and wine in general) has trickled into the shop. You can find us drooling over this Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams London Chaise Lounge in amethyst any day of the week. We are also loving John Robshaw’s Tudela Decorative Pillow. Made of 100% Abaca, this pillow would make a punchy yet durable addition to any ultra lived-in space. With Madeline Wenrib’s one-of-a-kind Vintage Moroccan Rug showcased in a deliciously saturated plum, how could go wrong with incorporating a little wine into your home. Go ahead. Just say yes. If you are of age, of course. All of the items below are available to order through Coveted Home.

Floored by Good Design

Madeline Weinrib once called her induction into the business of textile design “ironic”. Although her great-grandfather, Max Weinrib, was the founder of ABC Carpet & Home, Madeline became a painter and eventually taught drawing at CUNY before she ever found interest in handcrafted carpets and textiles. Inspired by the idea of modernizing “folkloric and traditional patterns”, she eventually launched her first carpet collection with ABC in 1997 and has since become a household name in the industry.

Weinrib’s rugs exude an heirloom quality that is luxurious and sensible. We have several of her gorgeous styles showcased and available for purchase at the store. Something I have learned from Madeline Weinrib is that a rug should command attention without separating itself from the environment it dwells in. Keeping this in mind as well as practicality, construction, and design should help you in choosing the perfect rug for any space.

Along with Madeline Weinrib, we also feature rugs from Dash & Albert. They have an amazing selection of high quality, affordable cotton, indoor/outdoor, and wool rugs in all sizes. Made from 100% polypropylene, I particularly adore their indoor/outdoor rugs for high traffic areas, if you have pets, or even small children in your home. Their hand loomed woven wool rugs come in gorgeous color combinations that are positively unexpected. What is equally impressive about both Madeline Weinrib and Dash & Albert is that they transition seamlessly in traditional to modern spaces.
