Auditory Aesthetics | Johnny Flynn

auditory aesthetics johnny flynn music design review

Johnny Flynn is the quintessential one-man-band.  The singer-songwriter to end all singer-songwriters, who’s taken the “folk” aesthetic of Simon and Garfunkel and submerged it into a crockpot along with grunge, Brit-pop and English shanties. And like his music, the design scene is experiencing a similar revival — That of Americana — where farmhouse sentiments meet the 21st century — where Folk Art meets Tribal — where Country and Space Age collide… you know what I mean. I think.

As such no trend feels more appropriate than to pair him alongside the maker movement. Where Rustic farmhouse notes mingle with bops and bits of the modern rhythm. It’s an amazing time to be into design. When people, locals like you and me, have taken the initiative to invest in themselves learning how to make ceramics, furniture, and art, jewelry, food, you name it. Consider this the next renaissance.

It’s time to take the manufacturing of everyday goods int our own hands or support those that do.

Auditory Aesthetics / Beirut

Movements: Scandinavian Interior Design

Beirut’s eclectic sound is the inspiration for this installment of Auditory Aesthetics. We’ve been spending some time in the shop listening to their 2015 album No No No. It is full of interesting, catchy tunes. The sound on No No No is more stripped down than on some of their previous records. But it is still layered with piano, brass, and strings. Beirut seamlessly fuses musical styles from various cultures and time periods. We especially love the Latin and Eastern European musical influences.  Beirut’s musical style is eclectic, and we also enjoy interiors that incorporate design elements from different times and cultures. The music on No No No reflects an appreciation for the beauty that can be found in the “other”.  We’ve rounded up some rooms that include cultural artifacts that have deep meaning and timeless beauty.

Design and Cocktails in Cuba : Movements Blog

Beyond the Mambo, guitar strumming streets of Communism, Cuba hides one of the richest fields of design and interior inspiration. Earth tones merge naturally into bright pastels and woods and metals collide in a look that can only be called organic industrial.

Design elements throughout Cuba infuse native island culture, African sentiments and Spanish colonialism. All this and with a twist of Art Deco. What may appear gaudy on the surface, is far deeper and more charming in its depths and we’ve just begin to plunge into this extraordinary sea. We eagerly await for Cuban/American relations to soothe as more and more of the tiny Caribbean island comes into the spotlight

So pour yourself a Cuba Libre (recipe below) let the tunes flow* and dive into the world of Cuban design.

Auditory Aesthetics: Neko Case

Neko Case….what more should be said? She is a rockstar in more ways than one. A talented musician. An advocate for animal rights. A saucy feminist who inspires us all with her songs and unique sense of humor. A Neko Case album favorite? Fox Confessor Brings the Flood released in 2006. With songs like ‘Hold On, Hold On‘, ‘John Saw That Number‘, and ‘That Teenage Feeling‘, Fox Confessor was AND still is a stunning collection of work. Her country twang easily evokes romance and despair with equal amounts of eery in each. She is one of a kind. We would like to think this room inspired by the album cover of Fox Confessor is just that…

Dark. Industrial with a hint of glam. Slightly romantic. Literal in color and, obviously, the fox. Couldn’t help it. The fox had to be a part of the story. Most pieces shown can be purchased through Coveted Home. Items listed below. Let us help you design your life.

Christmas: Auditory Aesthetics

Christmas

I’ve been a fan of the band Low for many years, but somehow, I missed their 1999 Christmas album. I heard one of their Christmas songs on the radio last year and immediately recognized Mimi Parker’s unique vocals. The album, aptly titled Christmas has quickly became one of my holiday favorites. The album contains more original songs than covers, which is refreshing. The first song, “Just Like Christmas” (an original) is my favorite song on the album. It has a wonderful retro, lo-fi feel and is the poppiest track on the album. One of the classic songs they cover is Blue Christmas (Elvis Presley), and it is the most despondent sounding version that you could ever imagine. It’s not the type of Christmas album that you’d want to play a party, but it is perfect for listening to on quiet nights, while sitting around the fire, drinking toddies. The traditional yet slightly unconventional feel of the album as well as the references to Sweden in the song “Just like Christmas” helped inspire this Auditory Aesthetic collection.XmasLarge You can find Low’s Christmas album on Spotify or YouTube. We hope you enjoy listening to it while you shop this Auditory Aesthetics post.

Natalie Prass: Auditory Aesthetics

As one of Rolling Stone’s “Ten New Artists You Need To Know” as well as one of Time Magazine’s “15 Artists To Watch in 2015″, Natalie Prass has definitely made an impression on the critics. And on the shop! Songs from her debut album have been sprinkled throughout our shop beats for months now. Her voice is haunting, sharp, and powerful. Yet there is an intimacy to her songs that have a quality similar to Joni Mitchell. The storytelling is spot on and totally relatable. And can we talk about this album cover?! Total bang envy. Aside from the killer hair, the album was an exciting springboard to create a room similar in color and style for our most recent Auditory Aesthetics installment. What do you think? Would Natalie approve of our interior interpretation? We sure hope so….

Speaking in Tongues: Auditory Aesthetics Music & Design Blog

TalkingHeads5_SpeakingInTongues

Talking Heads’ 1983 album Speaking In Tongues is the band’s most approachable, but also arguably most creative, work. Widely regarded as a New Wave triumph, and, in my opinion, the most danceable album ever made, Speaking In Tongues saw the band employ a much-expanded lineup, adding up to 6 performers at live shows. Additionally, the clear influence of frontman David Byrne’s preoccupation (obsession?) with World Beat music is apparent on every track. It makes for an incredibly layered, creatively textured, infectiously catchy record that sounds as fresh today as it did 32 years ago. In keeping with the rhythmic and often funky vibe of the album, I chose objects that reflect a variety of cultures and aesthetics, but all possess a bit of postmodern “edge”, with simple and graphic geometries, colors ranging from muted to bright, and a clear nod to the early ’80s.

Kind of Blue: Auditory Aesthetics

“Everyone, even people who say they don’t like jazz, likes Kind of Blue. It’s cool, romantic, melancholic, and gorgeously melodic”         – Fred Kaplan

Miles Davis’ album Kind of Blue (1959) is often regarded as his best work as well as one of the best-selling and most influential jazz recordings of all time. If you ask me what kind of music I like, I would probably not say jazz. It is not that I don’t like jazz; it just isn’t something that I listen to on a regular basis. However, every time I hear Kind of Blue, I begin to question my usual listening choices. One can’t help but feel just a little bit cooler and a little more sophisticated while listening to the album. Kind of Blue is the perfect background music for a romantic dinner at home or drinks and good talks with friends. This Kind of Blue inspired collection has a mid century feel and is sophisticated and swanky without being pretentious. Of course, we had to include some blue accents. We’ve found some great organic shapes and textures as well as more refined metallic finishes. So, put on Kind of Blue, grab a cocktail, and enjoy these finds inspired by the album.
