Happenings at Coveted Home

Happy Spring! The weather in Kansas City has been perfection these past few weeks and the door remains wide open here at the shop. You know what they say, the only constant is change and that couldn’t be more true for us! Location changes, employee changes and now a move towards more of a lifestyle store instead of a furniture store. Big box stores have really changed the retail landscape over these past few years and as a small business it has affected us in a big way. We are now adding as many “small batch” (meaning not produced in large quantities) lines that we can get our hands on, the more obscure the better. We are also focusing on our ever growing inventory of curated vintage and if you haven’t checked out our “flea” category be sure to get in here or shop it online here.  It seems to be the only way to stand apart from the ubiquitous big box retailers and as a bonus we know we are supporting another small business. The offerings are still mainly home focused, but we are adding a few more fashion items such as more leather goods and jewelry.

The showroom floor has less furniture but more small goods.

We added new light fixtures from Worley’s Lighting above the counter and in the center of the shop, this is their Colony fixture in oxidized brass.

Everyone’s new favorite cozy corner.

More Apothecary, books & candles are being added to the line up.

We turned one of the back corner nooks into the kitchen & bar area and painted the wall black!

We added a bar! We now serve wine & coffee (we got an espresso machine!) and serve Meta Coffee. Wine & coffee is donation based, stop by anytime we’d love to have you!

We’ve got an amazing new art line in the store, Twyla. If you are looking for affordable contemporary art come see us! We’d love to help you explore the line and pick the right piece for your home. Twyla offers all kinds of services including mock ups of the art in your home.

Gather ‘Round the Table this Thanksgiving

We often hear people say that Thanksgiving is their favorite holiday. Something about the simple pleasure of gathering with friends and family over copious amount of food is so comforting. We had the pleasure of hosting our friends from Porter Teleo in the shop for a little photo shoot of their newly released table linens (just in time for Thanksgiving!), which are gorgeous and hand painted little pieces of art in themselves. We played around with styling some of our table top pieces with their linens and the result was quite lovely. We hope it provides you some inspiration for entertaining this holiday season.

Client Work: A Living Room Designed for Retreat

I just can’t help but do another before and after with this project. I love the satisfaction of going back to the before pictures after a project has been professionally photographed to see the transformation! This space had several challenges–you might be able to tell that while the room is rather large, right down the center there are 2 large columns that could not be moved. The columns split the room up and made furniture placement a challenge. The clients wanted a comfortable space where they could entertain and watch movies with their teenage daughter and two dogs. We had a moderate budget to work with, considering the size of the room and the amount of items it would need to feel complete.

At my first visit, the room was full of mismatched pieces that were either hand-me-downs or had been around since college days. The original layout didn’t quite flow which left the room feeling choppy and unorganized. This led to a lot of dead space which wasn’t being utilized. At that time I was completely overloaded with projects, so I reached out to my sister, Amanda Steiner, who happened to have just launched her own design business in Portland, Oregon and was looking for work. We worked together to create a space that was welcoming, comfortable, stylish with a bit of zen–the clients requested a spot for their daily meditating.

By reorientating  the sofa and the television and creating a sitting area by the fireplace, where they can read and drink their morning coffee, we really opened the space up.

We styled the books in the shelves with the spine turned in to create a more cohesive, clean and minimalist feeling. The art above the fireplace is so amazing and we didn’t want anything to distract from it!

A true blend of high and low items from vintage Coveted Home flea finds, accessories from Target, furniture from West Elm, CB2 and splurges on Moroccan rugs and the beautiful brushstrokes lamp from Jana Bek, the house is an eclectic mix that hits all the right notes.

Reimagining Traditional in a Living & Dining Room

Some people want interior design done quickly. I find the best results when design is not rushed or put on an artificial timeline of having to be completed. If you want your home to feel like it evolved over time, then you have to let it do so. I always work off a plan, but if one element in a room design gets changed (which is almost inevitable) it almost always leads to more changes. When changes arise, I don’t always have the perfect solution right away, but I know if I let myself simmer on it, then the solution will present itself to me, naturally. Its like when you are trying to think of someones name but you can’t remember it– and you know as soon as you stop thinking about it, the name will come to you. This happens to me all the time with design, as it is a creative process.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with these clients, who love collecting and curating their personal art collection, for several years. We did their living room a few years ago and they recently came back to ask me to help complete the dining room. Between light fixtures being back ordered and waiting on the rings to come in for the custom draperies, the room took over 6 months to complete but it also allowed the room to evolve organically over time, resulting in a finished product that reflects their whimsical, slightly quirky style melding just right in their more traditional style Westwood Hills home.  Now they have a space they truly love spending time in that was  worth the wait. Suffice it to say, we’re all thrilled with the finished space!

What they Covet with Arielle Goldman

We met Arielle Goldman, like many of our other new design friends, on Instagram. Arielle’s Instagram feed (@ariellesgoldman) is full of lovely snapshots of good food, good drinks, and good design. The images of her library that she shared in #mycovetedhome caught our attention, and we’ve been fans of her work since! Her blog Scotch & Nonsense is a further extension of her impeccable taste and fab design skills. We’ve asked Arielle to share with us what she’s been coveting, and we just love what she has chosen.

Arielle Scotch & Nonsense

About Arielle: “I’m a designer at an architecture firm, and in my free time I explore my adopted city of Richmond, try out for new (and old) whiskey drinks, and work on our newly acquired 150 year old home with my husband. And, of course, write about it all at Scotch and Nonsense. I’d say that my taste veers toward the bold and masculine, but that’s subject to change. What never changes is my passion for design with a strong point of view and that respects and complements its space.”

What Arielle is Coveting: “I just adore the shot of this Melbourne home. The moody, rich colors, statement furniture, and slightly offbeat yet totally perfect painting are all speaking to me. It’s my favorite combination of old elements with a modern sensibility. And I’m pretty sure those are the prettiest drooping tulips I ever saw.”

OKL Eiffel Leather

“This leather arm chair from One Kings Lane is too good. I love a leather sling chair, and this one stands out with its luxurious gray leather. It’s got that classic modern shape, but it’s a bit more inviting than some modern pieces can be.”

CH Kohinoor candlesticks

“How great are these Kohinoor rosewood candlesticks from Coveted Home? I love the quality of the wood and their shape. A perfect dose of warmth and personality.”

The_Duelist-final

“So this one is a bit of a cheat. I’m no longer coveting this Grandville print from Triple Stamp Press because I recently picked up a pair for myself. Saturated color, an old world look, and just the right oddball vibe. It’s my own personal trifecta.”

CH Bonne Etoile Calendar

“I’m a wee bit obsessed with this Bonne Etoile calendar from Coveted Home. The design is a little whimsical and totally lovely. Much more so than my google calendar. In fact, I’m positive I’d be better with deadlines if I had one of these to keep my desk company. Maybe 2016 is the year of the grown-up calendar.”

100086

“I’m a total sucker for good color, which isn’t as easy to find as you’d think. Lately I’ve been vibing dark paints, but this Stone Blue shade from Farrow and Ball manages to be rich, moody and airy all at once.”

Thanks for sharing what you’ve been coveting, Arielle! We look forward to seeing more good design and delicious food and drinks on you IG account and blog!

DwellStudio at Coveted Home

We are excited to officially announce our newest upholstery line at Coveted Home – DwellStudio. DwellStudio was founded in 2000 by Christiane Lemieux. DwellStudio started as a unique and modern textile company but has expanded their brand to include home accessories and furnishings. Coveted Home carries some of their home accessories, but we are especially pleased to offer DwellStudio furniture. We’re very impressed with the  furniture’s quality and style, and so are our clients. We want to share with you a few of the reasons why we adore this upholstery line and some of our favorite pieces.

Why we love DwellStudio furniture

  1. They look gorgeous
  2. They are high-quality pieces
  3. The fabric options are varied (but not overwhelming) and awesome
  4. The prices are beyond reasonable

People commonly ask if DwellStudio (yes, it’s all one word) is related to Dwell Magazine. While they both revolve around modern interiors, they are not related or owned by the same company.

Coveted Home + KC Pet Project

We LOVE animals! That is why we’re thrilled to announce that we will be donating 10% of the proceeds from our signature candle line to KC Pet Project. KC Pet Project (KCPP) is an awesome local nonprofit organization! KCPP’s mission is “to end the killing of healthy and treatable pets in Kansas City, Missouri by using the most progressive and lifesaving programs and promoting effective animal control policies” (kcpetproject.org). They maintain a no-kill animal shelter for Kansas City, Mo. and find new families for homeless pets. Yay!
