A Young Family Starts Fresh in a New Build

Welcome to the reveal of one of my favorite projects, referred to as Starting Fresh. After relocating to Kansas City (Prairie Village) from California with their two young children and purchasing a new construction home, these homeowners reached out to me for help with furnishing the interior. We were starting from scratch–they literally had no furniture or accessories that they wanted to use from their previous house, so this project was a complete blank slate–so fun! Having clients that trust in your vision is so nice and always creates the best results. It also helped that the builders, Koenig Building + Restoration, had done a beautiful job on the home and had chosen great materials for the build out.

All photography by Sarah Sweeney  — she killed it on this one, so many amazing detail shots!

Client Work: A Stylish & Functional Family Room, Before & After

This space was so fun to work on, my clients were so excited about transforming the space and had a great vision for how they wanted it to feel: light, bright, comfortable with a bit of a California vibe. We only did one room together, so the process went quickly but their space did present some challenges. For the size of the house, the kitchen and adjoining family room are actually on the small side. This is a family with teenagers and this spot is a highly trafficked area for relaxing, watching tv and eating meals. We needed to fit a lot of comfort and functionality into a relatively tight space. And that funny little fireplace on the wall wasn’t doing this room any favors…

Reimagining Traditional in a Living & Dining Room

Some people want interior design done quickly. I find the best results when design is not rushed or put on an artificial timeline of having to be completed. If you want your home to feel like it evolved over time, then you have to let it do so. I always work off a plan, but if one element in a room design gets changed (which is almost inevitable) it almost always leads to more changes. When changes arise, I don’t always have the perfect solution right away, but I know if I let myself simmer on it, then the solution will present itself to me, naturally. Its like when you are trying to think of someones name but you can’t remember it– and you know as soon as you stop thinking about it, the name will come to you. This happens to me all the time with design, as it is a creative process.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with these clients, who love collecting and curating their personal art collection, for several years. We did their living room a few years ago and they recently came back to ask me to help complete the dining room. Between light fixtures being back ordered and waiting on the rings to come in for the custom draperies, the room took over 6 months to complete but it also allowed the room to evolve organically over time, resulting in a finished product that reflects their whimsical, slightly quirky style melding just right in their more traditional style Westwood Hills home.  Now they have a space they truly love spending time in that was  worth the wait. Suffice it to say, we’re all thrilled with the finished space!

Styled at Home

Every once in a while I like to take home some Coveted Home inventory and style it in my house. Its fun for me and I hope it helps provide you inspiration for your own home. Over the Memorial Day holiday weekend I cleaned, styled and shot pictures and had a little company over! I’m including an easy recipe that we cooked on the grill.

Jaclyn Joslin living room

If you happened to see the last style post I did at my home you may notice a change in my DwellStudio Silverado sofa. While I love a leather sofa, Simone and I never quite found it cozy for snuggling. I was always laying down blankets to sit on top of (Simone always preferred sitting on top of a blanket as well) so I finally decided to just have the seat cushion recovered in a washable cotton. I also had my upholsterer add feathers, making it more like a down pillow top mattress and it is unbelievably comfortable.

Navarro pillow

I’ve loved the texture and pattern of the smaller accent pillow and had a sneaking suspicion it would fit in perfectly in my living room. I can’t believe there’s still one of the larger animal print pillows left in the shop–this is a gorgeous $260 pillow on sale for $100! Snatch that up, someone please!

Susan Connor Prism throw

I made some big changes to my coffee table! Previously I had a round marble tray in the middle with a grouping of items. I’d been craving to get out some of my design books that were tucked away so decided to ditch the tray, put out some favorite books and add a few items on top. The little vase that the plant is in is vintage from Coveted Home Flea, the lovely handmade bowl is by Isabel Halley and can be found here. I also added the Susan Connor Prism throw to my sofa and I love the pop of indigo it adds.

bar essentials

A fully stocked bar can make quite the impression. We have so many wonderful bar accessories in the shop right now, stay tuned as they will be part of our June promotion! These items are staples at my bar: Coveted Home signature candle, coasters, bottle opener, wine bottle stopper, napkins, bowl (similar). I’ve decided that our Rosa Tote is a must have and we’ve marked it down to 30% off for this post! I’ve used it for groceries, lugging around work samples, my laptop, travel and although I haven’t used it for these purposes, I could see it being used for a workout tote, beach tote or baby bag.

corn on cobb

Thai street corn on the cobb:

6 ears of corn

1/2 cup coconut milk, full fat

2 tbs. raw sugar

1 tsp ea. cinnamon & cayenne pepper

1/2 tsp. ginger powder

dash of salt

Combine ingredients (except corn) and simmer on stove for 5 minutes.

Strip the husk back but don’t pull it off, and use 2 of the husk blades to tie back the rest and form a handle.

Baste the ears well and place on grill, continue to baste while grilling for 12-15 minutes or blackened.

This was a delicious new way to prepare corn that no one at our party had tried before but everyone loved!

The long road to the Plaza

It’s been a while since we got a blog post up. It’s not out of laziness, I promise. As I am sure you have heard by now, we have relocated the store to the Country Club Plaza! And it was quite an undertaking, let me tell you. Our construction crew, KC Home Solutions, killed it on what may have been the fastest remodel in history and turned our space around in 3 short weeks (I highly recommend them for your next remodel project). We closed up shop in Prairie Village on April 30th and were open on the Plaza 8 short days later, May 8th. This wasn’t just a “pick up and move” kind of move, mind you. We actually have an entire store full of new display units, furniture and accessories. Everything had to be unboxed, unpacked, merchandised, tagged and entered into our point of sale system…and 4 days before we were to open our doors, our computer (with the point of sale system) crashed. We retrieved the restored computer from the “doctor” the day of opening at 9:30am.

The first week went off quite well despite our setbacks and we got most of the kinks worked out in time for our grand opening party, which we hosted on the 16th. The party was a great success, and if you happened to make it by that night, thank you for celebrating with us.

Amidst all of this (6 days into being open in the new store), I received a phone call with some very unexpected and upsetting news regarding the future of Coveted Home’s product offerings. I am not ready to share quite yet what this is, but there will be a blog post about it coming soon. I am a true believer in things happening for a reason, that my best is always ahead of me and that ultimately this will only bring better things for Coveted Home. Right now though, I have been pushed way out of my comfort zone (I know this is always a good thing as well!) and it will take some time to adjust. Stay tuned for what is sure to turn into exciting new avenues for us.

If you haven’t been to the new Plaza store yet, please stop by and see us. We have so many amazing new lines and products we can’t wait to share with you! It is a completely new experience–have I  mentioned our complimentary wine and coffee bar?! We are here, ready to share a drink with you and let you experience the new and improved Coveted Home store. Shop local Kansas City!

More shout outs to other local businesses that helped us pull off the new store on time, we couldn’t have done it without you!

Brass Tacks KC built our wall shelving unit along with a beautiful display console table that is available to order.

Matt Castilleja built our sales floor product display tables.

Hufft Projects built our sales counter with built in jewelry display case.

KC Home Solutions completed the entire construction build out which included new walls, new ceiling, new floors, electrical, paint and trim.

Interiors by Coveted Home

I recently had the opportunity to help a family of four update their living room. They had just completed an addition of an awesome screened in porch that is adjacent to the fireplace wall which zapped the living room of much natural light. The room was dark and the furnishings were a bit dark and dated, not reflecting the young, vibrant family that occupies the home. The room had to be functional for their lifestyle–this is the room they watch movies in together as a family and it is open to the kitchen so it serves as the main hub of the house. Comfort was the number one priority. The young boys are rough on furnishings, so it had to stand up to them, making durability the second priority. The third priority was that the space be lightened up and have a fun and fresh feeling to it.

A few “before” photos taken on my phone at the initial consultation:

My clients one request was that we keep her existing coffee table, other than that we replaced everything. Luckily the coffee table fit the space and worked perfectly with the new floor plan.

I suppose I am not a huge fan of the matching sofa/loveseat combo. We opted instead for two large and comfortable Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams sofas to face each other. These particular sofas are no longer available, in fact this client got 2 of the very last frames left! We went with a dark taupe fabric for them that is soft, easy to clean and won’t show every little smudge.

I love the John Robshaw for Duralee fabric we used on the chairs!

My clients uncle is an artist and she commissioned him to do this large scale abstract over the sofa. We sent him fabric swatches and paint chips for color inspiration. I love how it turned out and it has sentimental value for the owners which makes it even more special. [Art by Norman Caldwell]

My client says the blue glass lamp from Barbara Cosgrove Lamps always gets compliments from her guests. I’d say its one of my favorite elements in this room also: )
